Flight Radiotelephony Operator’s Licence (RT Practical)
A Flight Radiotelephony Operator’s Licence (FRTOL) is required to operate the radio equipment in aircraft. Better known as a radio licence, you will need an FRTOL in order to communicate with other air and ground stations. It is endorsed on your flight crew licence and is usually applied for at the same time. Once issued, it is valid for life.
At Freedom Aviation we offer both the required training, and the two ground exams that you need to pass in order to gain your radio licence. The first ground exam is one of the nine multiple choice PPL theory exams, whereas the second is a practical exam during which you will undertake a simulated flight with an FRTOL examiner. During this exam, you will be expected to make all the required calls for a typical VFR cross-country flight, along with a number of emergencies. The practical test will take approximately an hour and a half, including planning and briefing time, and is carried out at our Cotswold Airport base, using our radio simulation computer software.
We recommend that you prepare for the communications exams by participating in one of our ground school days which run every four to six weeks either as a small group, or individually as needed. During the day we will prepare you to sit the communications multiple choice theory exam, which you will typically sit on the same day, as well as the practical test which can be booked with our in-house examiner Dave Jelly, at a date to suit you. Alternatively, we can tailor a course to suit your training needs.
