Training
Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC)
The British weather can be famously unpredictable, but by completing an IMC, you will gain the skills you need to safely fly in instrument conditions. The IMC allows pilots to maintain instrument flying skills within the UK without having to complete a costly and lengthy full Instrument Rating.
Pre course requirements:
- 25 hours of flying time since PPL issue, including 10 hours PIC and 5 hours cross country (but training for this rating may be included in the 25 hours required)
- A night rating for the IMC to be valid at night
- Hold a Class 1 or 2 medical certificate
What does the training involve?
- 15 hours of flying time
- A multiple-choice theory exam (ground school is available)
- Skill test
Flying Training
During your training you will be introduced to both basic and applied instrument techniques. You will learn how to fly straight and level, turn, climb and descend, all without looking out of the window. You will then learn how to perform instrument approaches down to the published minima, and practice these at a variety of local airfields.
Once you have completed your rating, you will able to fly under IFR in IMC in UK airspace. This applies to Class D/E airspace and uncontrolled airspace, including instrument approach procedures down to published minima.
